In case you didn’t know, Tuesday, May 7, was Teacher Appreciation Day. Well, someone should tell that to high school student Jeff Bliss of Duncanville, Texas, who was featured in a video posted to YouTube on Monday. The video, which was shot by a fellow student and has now gone viral, features Bliss ripping into his world history teacher for what he believes are poor teaching practices.
And if you think Bliss regrets his actions, think again. He spoke to ABC’s WFAA about why he lashed out at the teacher. He said, “I believe that somebody needed to say this. I want to see a teacher stand up and interact with the students, get involved, discuss, talk, question, and get deep into the subject.”
Tammy Kuykendall, chief communications officer for the Duncanville Independent School District, said, “The district is aware of the video, and we are currently addressing the situation.”
The video has now been viewed more than 140,000 times. Most of the reactions to Bliss’s rant have been positive. One commenter wrote, “Nice one Jeff. At least one person in that room was giving a damn about educating the students. Shame it wasn’t the teacher.” Hmm, now there’s an idea for you, Jeff: Use that passion to become a good teacher yourself one day.

Old news, for sure, and it reminded me of a post I saw that something similar is happening in Malaysia. To be exact, teacher(s) are logging into Facebook while teaching in a classroom. According to the post, the said teacher was snapping a picture of him/herself. I can’t comment anymore because I can’t find the actual news, save for this one:
which is an even older news, and this may not be the same teacher that is currently on the hot plate right now.
This bit of news that I found means that this has been going on for sometime, and no one seemed to try do anything to stop this BUT bitch about it ON Facebook, probably hoping someone else would have big brassy balls enough to care about the kind of education that the future Malaysians are exposed to. When it comes to politics, everyone is ready to grab a chair and hurl it to the wall, to show how strong they are.
But I don’t blame people back home. What can you do when you have an ignorant hick as an Education Minister? Congratulations to Mr. Muhyiddin Yassin who let a bold statement about an issue that he apparently has no clue about go viral, Malaysia now has become a laughing stock all over the world, just like when the Iranian president proclaimed that, “there are no gay people in Iran.”
In this video, you can even hear the crew laughing in the background. Now how am I supposed to proudly introduce myself as well-educated Malaysian without someone muffling a chortle, or say, “Oh poor you no wonder you went to find education overseas.”
Yes, I am aware that nothing I wrote is new so far. I also found some articles that ran an update, saying the Malaysian Education Ministry denied releasing that statement. But this did not materialize from thin air.
The old ministers must understand that in this day and age, things get out of hand quickly, especially if you don’t watch your mouth and say bigoted statements.
